- Drupal is really heavy artillery if it comes to content management. But if previous tools are simply not enough for customers demands we have no choice. But nothing's wrong with that. Drupal allows you to run blogs, discussion sites, directories, e-commerce sites or even social networking sites.
Social networks and web applications
We're deep into Web 2.0 phenomenon. Actually, we're thrilled because we're making part of it. Designing and developing web applications is one of our most favorite things here at stbit. When it comes to development of social websites and application we take this really seriously.
For development we're using the proven tools. PHP Symfony is one them. It offers great scalability and performance for developing applications written in PHP. We utilize it create social networking sites.
Ruby on Rails is simply the love of every programmer here. It let's write beautiful code avoiding slow, unnecessary configurations. Boosting productivity and really simple prototyping, Ruby on Rails is ideal for developing some task oriented application like Basecamp. It may not scale as well as PHP application, but don't worry. We've tried this also and we know what we're doing.
Tools and technologies
Here at stbit, we're constantly learning new things. We're also using a lot of things that improve out workshop. Let me give you example of couple, that we're using on our everyday basis:
- Our project (and clients) management would be a pain without Basecamp. We manage there all dadlines, todo lists, specifications and other important stuff. Basecamp allows us also collaborate with customers, so if your're interested in our offer, you'll probably get chance to try it if you haven't seen it before.
- We're working on Macs. It's not like we don't like Windows. We simply think that Mac OS X is far better than any other operating system. We write our code in Textmate. Oh, yes - we love the iPhone too.
- SVN is the bag, that keeps our code secure, allowing us to collaborate and working on code without conflicts and overwrite problems. We're also giving some love to GIT (it's always good to have alternatives.)
- When it comes to hosting, we're enjoy using Amazon Web Services they offer great hosting services allowing to host and easily scale our project into the cloud. But of course, on daily basis we're working on classic hosting stacks with Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. Looking for Rails deployment solutions? We also utilize some neat stuff like Phusion Passenger™ — a.k.a. mod_rails, Rack, Mongrell and Capistrano.
